My Committees

Education Committees

This working group reviews the University’s assessment and feedback policies and practices to enhance effectiveness, consistency, and equity. The group also monitors the Code of Practice on Assessment and the PGR Code of Practice.

Senate is one of the highest decision-making bodies at the University and is responsible for promoting research, promoting and regulating learning and teaching, and for maintaining the quality of standards of the University’s academic provision. The Guild’s officers, along with three elected Student Reps, work throughout each academic year to ensure that student voice is at the heart of the decisions made by Senate about/for the University.

This committee sits under Collaborative Provision Committee to review and approve new partner programmes with the University

From peer mentoring, lecture capture, vital and the library, the committee has an oversight of all academic aspects of the Student Experience in the University and to promote its ongoing enhancement. This committee initiated discussions about the BAME attainment gap, which led to the Task and Finish Groups focusing on the attainment gap through the University’s Access & Participation Plan, for example. This Committee is the next one down from Senate. Bertie, an ex-President, was able to secure a ratio of a minimum 75% face to face teaching/ contact versus virtual teaching at the beginning of the 21-22 academic year. The paper that was submitted to the Education Committee was informed by the Guild’s Hybrid Teaching Survey – one the biggest surveys the Guild has ever completed with around 15% of all students submitting their views.

This group formed since the cancellation of face-to-face teaching and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. It continues to exist to discuss arising issues in Higher Education. Student Officers proposed plans for more in-person teaching after running the Hybrid Learning were brought to this group. The student voice is a priority at this committee.

This committee has oversight of the three Service Units based in the North-West region: Liverpool University Royal Naval Unit (LURNU); Liverpool University Officer Training Corps (LOTC); and Liverpool University Air Squadron (LUAS).

This committee oversees the development and implementation of strategies, policies and frameworks designed to promote research at international and world-leading standards across all disciplines in the University. Jamilia, an ex-Vice President, has collaborated with a university project group on researching the obstacles that face POC students, especially Black British students, and prevent them from progressing into PGR positions. We worked with the group to hold focus groups and produced the report that is going on to inform the next stage of the work.

Working across the University, this group receives and responds to live timetabling issues, support collaborative resolutions of issues and supports the process of producing the academic and exam timetables.

Corporate

This is the trustee board of the University and its most senior decision-making body. Everything goes through Council and its sub-committees (planning and resources, governance and appointments, honorary degrees). Council is where you can influence key decision makers. Two subcommittees include: Joint Committee on Honorary Degrees This is a council sub-committee where members decide who is going to receive honorary degrees at the annual winter and summer ceremonies. Nominations Committee To seek and consider nominations for, and to make recommendations to the Council, for the appointment of; potential lay members to Council, and other Council-appointed members (drawn from Senate, Professional Services, and members of particular University committees and bodies).

This committee forms the strategic relationship between the University and the Guild. It monitors and signs off the Guild’s reports and accounts. This committee acts as a forum to discuss university and Guild joint campaigns and activities.

International

This group meets twice a year to go through applications for the Asylum Seeker’s Bursary. An Asylum Seeker’s Bursary for Undergraduate courses was introduced in 2017, this covers tuition fees and maintenance with some students offered accommodation in halls. .

Student Experience Committees

In October 2019, the Equality and Human Rights Commission released a report on their inquiry into the racism experienced by staff and students in UK Universities, see report here. From this, the University set up a response group to co-ordinate anti-racism work across the institution. The group has written a plan with recommendations related to race equity work in the University. Guild Officers have fed into the University’s Racial Equality Action Plan, designed to lay the foundations in a step into tackling racial inequality/racism on campus.

This committee considers how to make best use of the University’s heritage collections and cultural activities in order to benefit the University’s teaching and research activities and the University’s engagement with the Liverpool City Region and its cultural life. Recently, this policy has been focused on Liverpool’s colonial and imperialist past.

This meeting gives an insight into the campus plan, building works and changes on campus, which have been revised since the pandemic. Campus accessibility is discussed and actioned here.

This committee plays a significant role in acting as channel for fostering inter-faith activity and sharing updates of each respective chaplain. There are four chaplains shared with John Moores University.
