Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month: Exploring Liverpool’s Vibrant LGBTQ+ Scene

To continue recognising LGBTQ+ History Month, let's dive into the vibrant LGBTQ+ scene across Liverpool.

LGBTQ+ Communities

Liverpool is home to several communities and organisations which help LGBTQ+ individuals come together, socialise, and celebrate queer culture as a group.

LGBT+ Society is a student run society at the Liverpool Guild which welcomes all members of the LGBTQ+ community at the University.

Homotopia is a Liverpool based arts and social justice organisation making a cultural impact through art and activism. They aim to support and platform local, national, and international LGBTQIA socially engaged artists and creatives.
They have multiple projects aimed at supporting national LGBTQIA+ culture and community.

Wirral LGBT Network offers information, advice, support, advocacy, training and volunteering opportunities for LGBTIQA people.

Liverpool Pride
Liverpool Pride is an event that just keeps growing every year, with a record breaking 25,000 people marching at the parade in 2024, and an estimated 60,000 attendees in total over the whole event. This celebration of diversity and equality highlights the city’s commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community and we can’t wait to see what Liverpool has in store for its Pride 2025 celebrations.

Night Life
Stanley Street has been home to the roots of the city’s LGBTQ+ community since the 1970’s, and is home to a cluster of gay bars and clubs.

LGBTQ+ Friendly Venues

Liverpool made history in 2011 by becoming the first British city to officially recognise a Gay Quarter, marked by the introduction of rainbow flags along Stanley Street.

Sport

For Football fans, Liverpool Football Club supporters can find a community in the group Kops Out, the LFC LGBTQ+ supporters group founded by Paul Amann. The group has helped raise issues of homophobia in the Premier League and has worked to ensure these issues to be taken more seriously.

Additionally, across the city there are several clubs which are founded on the aim of inclusivity in their sports.

Mersey Marauders FC is a Merseyside LGBTQ+ football club, providing a welcoming and inclusive space for players to enjoy the sport. Mersey Marauders have created a community of LGBT+ people (and allies) passionate about sport to both play and socialise.

Mersey Rose Recreationals is an inclusive cricket club that welcomes players of all backgrounds and skill levels.

The Tritons RUFC  is Liverpool’s first inclusive rugby team, providing a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals to engage in the sport.

Liverpool Frontrunners is an inclusive community road-running group that has strong ties to Liverpool’s LGBTQ+ community and friends, promoting fitness and camaraderie.
