January always seems to come in hard. Christmas is packed away for another year, the city feels a lot less sparkly and assessment season as come around quicker than any of us like! At the Guild, we’re here to help you every step of the way.
Here’s 5 tips to help make assessment season just that little bit easier:
1. Preparation is King!
We’ve all been guilty of a last-minute, late-night library session, but squashing all your revision in the night before an exam can make the whole experience way more stressful (shock). Make a plan that helps keep your tasks in manageable, realistic sections. Make sure to give time to revise for each of your assessments and exams in the days leading up to deadlines and plan your post-exam celebrations as something to look forward to!
Top Tip: Don’t just prep your revision! Plan your meals for the week so they’re ready after a long day at the library or heat your lunch up at the Guild’s microwave station.
2. Keep hydrated
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Drink. Your. Water. It might be everyone’s New Year’s Resolution but it’s extra important during exam season to keep your mind sharp. (No you can’t just drink coffee instead)
3. Comfort is key
Whether you’re a bedroom bookwork or a loyal SJ visitor, find the study space that works for you. Think about what each of your senses need to be productive: Do you prefer background noise, or need complete silence? Do you work better alone or with a mate? Think about the lighting, the space and that all important comfy chair!
The Courtyard is the perfect place for a group study session, or head to the second floor of the Guild for a more peaceful set-up at one of our hidden gem seating spaces.
4. Take time to switch off
Taking regular breaks is crucial for your productivity! Getting a change of scenery, enjoying some fresh air (preferably not in the pouring January rain) and even having a little scroll through TikTok will help you focus during your study sessions. Plan your breaks for a time that works best for you – everyone’s study pattern is different!
Remember: Allow yourself time every day to wind down, relax and switch off from revising (we know it's easier said than done!) You don’t need to be studying 24/7 and your downtime is important.
