UCU Preferendum: The Results are in

The University and College Union will be taking strike action from 1st – 3rd  December 2021, and ongoing action short of a strike in relation to pensions, pay and working conditions.  

A proposal to support the UCU was submitted to the Guild, and on Monday 29th  and Tuesday 30th November 2021, we held a preferendum for students to have a say on whether the Guild should support the upcoming UCU Industrial Action.  

After 1902 votes which is a 7% turnout of the student body, we can now reveal the action we will be taking. With 2184 points, you have voted for: Yes, The Guild should adopt the proposal.    

We will now take the forward the proposals in the student’s idea, Ahead of the strike action taking place from tomorrow 1st – 3rd December, and ongoing action short of a strike the Guild will:

  1. To officially support any industrial action that may take place.
  2. To release an immediate public statement showing support if staff take industrial action.
  3. To help educate students about any industrial action and explain why they should support it.
  4. To organise ‘teach-out’ events to bring staff and students together to learn and discuss a range of topics including the industrial action, trade unionism and higher education.
  5. To lobby the university to meet the demands made the University and College Union. 
  6. To not cross the picket line and safeguard students without ‘breaking the strike.’
