Women’s History Month - History that was made in the last 12 months

Happy Women’s History Month!

Often we think that “history” refers to things that happened in the distant past. We want to reflect on women’s history that we’ve experienced in the last 12 months.

In Music

All the albums nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys in 2025 were by female artists, and saw Beyonce win her first Album of the Year!

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour generated over $1.04 billion, becoming the biggest tour of all time. With Swift donating to food banks in each city, boosting the economies of each place she visited, and generously giving bonuses to her staff.

In Politics

2024 saw Mexico elect their first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, after serving as Mexico’s first female mayor.

Female safely:
51 men were sentenced in France for the atrocious abuse crimes committed against Gisele Pelicot. Gisele’s rejection of shame, showing a power in one’s ability to refuse to take oppression, instead make a change and statement to the world.

Safe zones were implemented outside of abortion clinics in England and Wales, meaning that anyone ‘protesting’ within 150 meters radius of abortion services will be arrested and fined. This is a significant milestone to reproductive justice!

In Fashion:
2024 saw Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o become the first African Ambassador for Chanel.

Alex Consani and Valentina Sampaio made history as the first ever trans models to walk the Victoria Secret runway at the 2024 Victoria Secret Fashion Show.

In Sport:

Women represented 49% of athletes at the Paris olympics, incredibly important as in 1960 women represented 11.4% of athletes, and only in 2012, 13 years ago, Women were allowed to compete in all sports for the first time.

Algerian Female Boxer Imane Khelif overcame vicious attacks on her gender, became Algeria’s first female gold medalist, and graced the cover of Vogue Arabia, expanding the view of what womanhood looks like.

While this is one short snapshot of the moments made, it is important to celebrate the major events to inspire others. As we move further into 2025 we can only hope that women can continue to make history, progress, and give us more reasons to celebrate.
