On the 8th March each year we celebrate International Women’s Day, which falls during the larger celebration of Women’s History Month throughout March. This month is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the contributions of women through history and the successes and struggles of women in contemporary society.
For some this month, they face the age of question of: Why? Why should we celebrate women for this one month?
Why celebrate this group which is 49.72% of the world’s population?
The answer lies in the historical and ongoing struggle for gender equality across the world!
Women’s History Month is not just about “girl power”, it is a celebration of achievements that were written out of history due to being a woman, about advances and developments which women were not credited for due to their gender.
For example, Rosalind Franklin discovered double-helix structure DNA only for two men to take credit and win the Nobel Prize for her work. Women’s History Month is therefore about ensuring that the efforts of women do not go unsung in the future.
Women’s History Month is also a time to acknowledge the diversity between women, intersectionality of their experiences, and how we can learn from our differences to support and respect each other.
Here are some ways you can honor and celebrate Women’s History Month this year:

Celebrate the women in your life: Show appreciation for the women in your life, including your family members, colleagues, friends, and mentors. Write a letter of appreciation or tell them how much they mean to you.
