As the academic year draws to a close, the Life Sciences Outreach Society is excited to invite all members to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 28th, from 4 PM to 5 PM in the Ken Saro-Wiwa Room. This important event is your chance to reflect on the past academic year, share your thoughts, and help shape the future of our society.
What is the AGM? Why attend?
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is an open meeting where all society members are encouraged to participate. It serves as a platform to reflect on our activities over the past year, evaluate our financial standing and collect feedback from our members on what can be improved. In addition, the AGM is a chance to learn more about how to get involved in the next year's committee.
We are currently looking for enthusiastic members to take on leadership roles in the society next year. If you are interested in running for a committee position, attending the AGM is highly recommended! We will explain the roles available and the responsibilities involved, and answer any questions you may have.
📅 Date: April 28th
⏰ Time: 4 PM - 5 PM
📍 Location: Ken Saro-Wiwa Room
What will happen at the meeting?
- Review of the year – A recap of the past year’s activities and accomplishments.
- Financial report – An update on the society’s financial position (budget and expenditures).
- Open discussion – An opportunity for members to share their thoughts on what worked well and what can be improved. Members can raise ideas for future events!
- Committee elections – While voting for new committee members will take place online through the Guild website, the AGM provides a chance to meet any new candidates and hear their visions for the LSO society.
Looking back at an exciting year
This academic year has been exciting for the Life Sciences Outreach Society! Throughout this year, we have had the chance to connect our members with several university-verified volunteering events, helping them gain valuable science outreach experience that is recognized in the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR).
Our year began with a Board Games and Pizza social on October 2nd, welcoming new and returning members. Later that month, our volunteers participated in the first Meet the Scientists event of the academic year at the World Museum. They helped families with hands-on activities, including the ever-popular strawberry DNA extraction, and joined educational stands that introduced children to the wonders of personalized medicine and computational biology.
In November, we embraced the spooky season with Spooky Science Week, collaborating with the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology (ISMIB) to run different science activities for local schools visiting the University of Liverpool. Our volunteers also supported another Meet the Scientists event at the Eureka Science + Discovery Museum that same month, where they engaged with families and their little ones to complete science activities designed to teach children about DNA, the immune system and personalized medicine. In December, we wrapped up the semester with a festive Christmas Movie Night, bringing members together for a screening of Love Actually.
The new year and the second semester at the university brought more exciting opportunities, including another Meet the Scientists event at the World Museum and the British Science Week event in March, both events where volunteers assisted with more science activities, including cell counting, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and colourimetry experiments.
Looking ahead, we are working with the Liverpool Guild of Students (Guild Schools Project) to run two immune system and digestive system workshops at Dovecot Primary School in May. More details will be shared soon!
A huge thank you to all our members who volunteered their time this year—your enthusiasm helps inspire the next generation of scientists!
What happens next?
We encourage all members to attend—whether you are considering a committee role or want to have your say in the society’s future. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out at lifesciencesoutreach@society.liverpoolguild.org.
We look forward to seeing you there and hearing your thoughts!
