The Biochemistry Society has achieved so much over the course of the 2024/5 academic year! As a committee, we aimed to help everyone meet and develop friendships through organising social events and academic opportunities throughout the year. As a small course at the university, it was important that our members had the chance to meet other students within the School of Biosciences, and so integrating socials with other courses was a must.
We kickstarted the year with a lab coat pub crawl, aiming to familiarise all the first years with each other and created a route of the best Liverpool pubs (starting with the Sphinx of course)! The sea of lab coats that followed meant we were easily findable for newcomers and it was the perfect way to start off the year.
We then organised a “Biochem take art!” event with Pinot and Picasso – this was a 3-hour session in which we all painted Mount Fuji alongside some lovely drinks. This was a great night, with all tickets sold, and some hidden artistic talent revealed!
Our academic social of the year was held in November, where Elliot Stollar (programme director of Biochemistry) was invited to speak about his career journey and research. The social was not complete without pizza and snacks for all and was a good chance for members to hear about potential career opportunities and the research world.
To close up semester 1, we hosted a winter party at Revolution on the Liverpool Albert Dock. This event was hosted in collaboration with Biomedical, Pharmacology, and Biosciences societies. Our photographer got some great pictures and we hope the 200 attendees enjoyed themselves.
Semester 2 began with exams, assignments, and more exams! We didn’t hesitate to organise a post-exams pub crawl to celebrate afterwards. The rest of semester 2 brought on another social – this time St Patrick’s Day themed – and the organisation of our summer ball in the Liver Building alongside the Biomedical Society. As a committee, we are super excited for this event following the May exam period – it will be a night to remember, with a 2-course meal, welcome drink, balcony access and DJ all included!
A big thank you to all the committee members (Rosie Harris, Nia Bhatia, Heather Norris, Ella Brooks, Imogen Fearon, Ella Darrant, Alicia Cornmell, and Poppy Daly) for our efforts this year, and we wish the next committee all the best – can’t wait to see what’s to come for the Biochem Soc.
