The goods that we consume, and the waste that we generate, have a huge impact on the environment, our society, and the economy. We believe that mindful consumption and sustainable practices are important for the future of our planet and functioning of our life systems. Our opportunities aim to inform, take action and make positive changes to our daily habits.

Leave Liverpool Tidy End of Year Clear Out

Don’t dump it, donate it! Join our end of year clear out project this May and June.

27000 tonnes of waste arise from UK households every year, of which over 50% goes to landfill causing the release of greenhouse gas emissions, and damage to our vital ecosystems. To combat local waste issues, Liverpool Guild of Students has partnered with the British Heart Foundation and Fareshare to Leave Liverpool Tidy. The aim of this project is to reduce the amount of reusable items that go into landfill and redistribute them via the British Heart Foundation and local food charities. Leave Liverpool Tidy is a community project that works in collaboration with Liverpool Universities, Students’ Unions, Councillors and local residents, all with the aim of reducing unnecessary waste.

In 2022: UoL had 763 bags of donations collected at the end of the year

£10,682 in total raised from UoL donations

6,104 tonnes diverted from landfill- the equivalent of 36,027kg CO2 emissions

At the end of every academic year, we work with the University of Liverpool Halls of Residence teams and Liverpool Student Homes to offer the chance to Leave Liverpool Tidy. The way it works is quite simple, if you’re leaving Liverpool, you gather all the stuff that you do not wish to move to your new place (such as clothes, kitchen equipment, or housing decorations or tinned food), and bring them -using a reusable bag- to one of our drop-off points and fixed donation points and ourselves, BHF and Fareshare will collect them to be repurposed.

British Heart Foundation accept all items except duvets, pillows, broken and dirty items, knives, hangers, and underwear. For electronics or bulky items, British Heart Foundation can collect directly from your home. Click here to book a collection or see community collections for regular items below.

Fareshare accept unopened dried foods, tins and jars still in date for distribution to local food banks.Food items are collected separately at drop-off points in all University of Liverpool Halls, in the Guild Street and at both the Sydney Jones and Harold Cohen libraries.
